Which nationalities qualify for China's 240-hour visa-free transit?
Citizens of 55 countries qualify: 40 European countries (including the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Russia), the US, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and 7 Asian countries (Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Qatar, Singapore, South Korea, UAE). Do I still need the transit policy if my country has 30-day visa-free entry?
No. Citizens of the 50 countries on China's unilateral visa-free list (including the UK and Canada since 17 February 2026) can enter for up to 30 days for tourism, business, family visits or transit — no onward ticket to a third country needed. That scheme currently runs to 31 December 2026. The 240-hour transit rules mainly matter for US, Mexican, Indonesian and a few other passport holders not on the 30-day list.
Is the 240-hour visa-free transit free of charge?
Yes. There is no fee. Border inspection issues a temporary entry permit at the port of entry at no cost (NIA).
Can I fly from my home country to China and back home again?
No. The policy covers transit to a third country or region — your onward destination must be different from where you arrived from. A round trip such as New York → Shanghai → New York does not qualify; you would need a visa (or 30-day visa-free entry if eligible).
Do Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan count as a "third region"?
In practice, yes — the official wording is transit to a third country or region, and itineraries such as London → Shanghai → Hong Kong are commonly accepted. Because the NIA page does not enumerate examples, confirm borderline routings with the NIA 12367 hotline before booking (NIA).
How are the 240 hours counted?
From 00:00 on the day after entry. Land at 06:00 on 1 July and the clock starts at 00:00 on 2 July, so you must depart by 23:59 on 11 July (Shanghai Municipal Government FAQ).
Do I need to apply in advance?
No advance application is possible or needed. You request visa-free transit at the border when you arrive, presenting your passport and confirmed onward ticket. Since 20 November 2025 you can pre-fill the arrival card online via the NIA website or the 12367 app (Beijing Municipal Government).
Which airports and ports can I use?
65 designated ports across 24 provincial-level regions, including Beijing Capital/Daxing, Shanghai Pudong/Hongqiao, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu and the West Kowloon high-speed rail station. Both your entry and exit must be through designated ports. The current port table is on the NIA policy page.
Can I travel between cities and provinces during the 240 hours?
Yes, within the permitted areas of the 24 covered provincial regions you may travel across provincial borders — e.g. arrive in Shanghai, visit Beijing and Xi'an, and depart from Guangzhou (Shanghai 240-hour portal). Check the permitted-area limits for less common regions before planning.
What documents will border officers check?
A passport valid for at least 3 months, a confirmed onward ticket (fixed date and seat) departing within 240 hours, and your arrival card. Officers may also ask about accommodation and itinerary (Shanghai FAQ).
Can I work or study during visa-free transit?
No. Permitted activities are tourism, business meetings, exchanges and family visits. Work, study and journalism require the corresponding visa obtained in advance (NIA).
What if I stay with friends instead of a hotel?
You or your host must register your accommodation with the local police station within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels do this automatically at check-in (Beijing Foreign Affairs Office).
Can I extend the 240 hours or convert to a visa in China?
Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances (e.g. medical emergencies, flight cancellations) by the local exit-entry administration. Plan your onward flight within the window; overstaying is a violation that can affect future entries.
My country is not on the 55-country list — do I have any option?
The separate 24-hour transit exemption applies to all nationalities at all open ports, if you transit to a third country or region within 24 hours with a confirmed onward ticket (NIA). For longer stays you need a visa.
Is the 240-hour policy permanent?
It has no announced end date (unlike the 30-day unilateral scheme, which currently runs to 31 December 2026). Rules and country/port lists do change — the list grew from 54 to 55 countries and 60 to 65 ports during 2025 — so always re-check the NIA page close to travel.
